Releasing Grief: A 45-Minute Sound Bath for Pet Loss

Jean Gutierrez, certified sound healer, Reiki practitioner, and grief support coach, leads this 45-minute sound bath for the Jasper community. If you've never done one, she explains it at the start. If you have, skip ahead and settle in.
What a sound bath is
In Jean's words, it's what it sounds like: "you're going to be bathing in healing frequencies." The sound guides you into a deep meditative state where the body can release what it's holding. Jean describes it as helping to move stuck or stagnant energy, and the Jasper members who use these regularly describe it more simply. It's the first thing that let them rest.
What you might notice
You might feel tingling in your fingers and toes, or your limbs might get heavy, like you're sinking into the floor. Some people feel the opposite and start to float. Colors, images or old memories can come up too. Jean asks you to pay attention to what surfaces, because it usually comes from the subconscious so you can acknowledge it and let it go. Emotions can come with the memories, and crying, laughing, or coughing are all forms of release. "It's neither good nor bad. It just is."
How to set yourself up
Lie on a couch or bed with a blanket, or sit if that's more comfortable. Headphones or a decent speaker make a difference. Jean opens with two deep breaths into the belly, then the only instruction that matters for the next forty minutes: "There's nowhere else to be and nothing else to do." Relax and receive. Falling asleep is fine.
She closes by bringing you back into the room slowly, wiggling fingers and toes, and sealing the practice with a hand on your heart. Give yourself a few minutes afterward before you go back to your day.
